I was quite happy with my Norton Package – System Works 2004, Antivirus 2005, Firewall 2002 – until I was forced into a change when the subscription of the firewall elapsed a couple of days ago. As it happens, my ISP (in France) proposes Norton products on a monthly subscription basis. So, I downloaded Norton Firewall 2006 from them for a subscription of 3 euros a month.
Now, whereas previously Firewall 2002 nestled nicely among the other programs on SW 2004 this sits apart. So what? Well, I get the impression that there are intrinsic incompatibilities meaning that when I ran One Button Checkup it found an unprecedented 1000+ errors in the shortcuts! And every time I run OBC, even just after repairing the errors, it still systematically finds errors in the shortcuts and the registry. Worse still, I can’t even access my own web pages! Created with Microsoft Front Page, there are hot buttons to open other pages and they no longer work at all – despite my spending 10 euros on a 30 minute phone call to the hotline of my ISP to try and sort it out!
These upgrades are a complete rip-off and the addition of layer upon layer of complication makes this particular software as inconvenient as the viruses its meant to be shielding you from.

Nothing can get out or in to my computer now without my approvement, that’s what I wanted when I bought a software firewall. I even got a traffic-monitor now which helps me to identify bandwith wasting applications. Another good feature is the invisibly-mode of the firewall, now nobody knows whether I’m online or not, and who can attack you when he doesen’t even know you’re there??

I was able to buy this at an extremely good price so for 1 year i used this running a Windows xp pc (instead of the very good Zone Alarm free edition assuming of course that a “paid-for” firewall has even better protection than a free one).Once i easily configured and updated it i put it through its paces.Surfing the internet seemed fine with no slowdown at all and no conflicts or problems with other installed programs (especially Avast Free edition anti-virus)..So far i can recommend this software and i will be ordering another subscription through Amazon this week.

Norton is probably the best firewall for the home market. With this release they have made the installation simpler. Hence you are required to restart your PC for updates less than previously. It also offers an almost seamless support against attacks (obviously dependant on user activity). It’s also very easy to maintain. So you can’t go wrong here unless you want to put your trust in your ISP as reviewed earlier

The formula might be somewhat simple, but I think that easy setup does make for a good firewall. Firewalls are often very difficult to understand and setup; it takes time and effort. This means many potential pitfalls or even an opportunity to take the easy route of uninstalling.
Norton makes it easy to setup your firewall. The software installs quickly; it comes with both automated software-recognition and a learning mode. This means it can identify many of the programs you use and will save you from rating standard application as secure. It also means that the firewall will observe your behaviour and be able to better understand the kind of settings you need, further decreasing your workload during the setup and learning phase.
