I don’t think I’m the only person that found this book boring? It goes on forever, the story as in the theme and ideas are okay but it’s not interestingly written, didn’t hold my attention and took me an age to read. Maybe because I had to read it for school I dunno, I couldn’t be bothered with it really. The rumour is that Harper Lee didn’t even write it- don’t know if it’s true or not? But to be honest Capote is better than this…. controversial you might say?

This book was probably very good in the day when racisim was kept to a whisper between people but in todays modern times subjects that arise in this book are of an every day occurance, The book is well written and very enjoyable, I was expecting more on the incident with Tom Robinson and the subsequent court case when this was just a small part of the book, still an enjoyable read, but the literay types like to jump on the band wagon and say a masterpeice but sorry there are more thought provoking books around.

I’m sure this would be a very good book…

If we didn’t have to read it sooo slowly (the first twenty-odd chapters don’t move that quick anyway) that by the time it gets to the point no one cares anymore…

If we didn’t have to analyze every character to death…

If we hadn’t had to fill half an exercise book with notes and spent hours doing homework on it…

In other words, if we didn’t have to do it for GCSE english.

Luckily, I did read it before we did it in English, and while it wasn’t exactly the best book I’ve ever read, it was OK, and it is good on the moral stuff, and descriptions and characters and stuff.

However, a book has to be very good (or very action-packed)to survive half a term of English lessons, and in my opinion, this does not pass muster. Especially since they will almost certainly find the boringest possible bit to make us write about…

But anyway, if you’re a reader not involved in the education system, you should probably read this. It’s the sort of thing you should have read at some point…

But if you’re a teacher, is there not any way you can avoid spoiling a perfectly good book for 30 young people? Oh well, it’s not your fault, I guess.
